Can You Hear Me? is an immersive virtual reality video installation that transports viewers into the shoes of women and their experience of cat calling and sexual harassment. The viewer enters the environment through a virtual reality headset. Inside, the viewer finds themselves alone, in a 3D room designed with 4 walls, ceiling and floor. Each surface acts as a screen for a collage of each’s own sexually exploitive and predatory images and audio from the videos playing in tandem.
This project utilizes 1) a satirical PSA and twitter scroll of responses to the prompt “what would you so if there were no men for 24 hours” to guide viewer into the realm of the female experience, 2) sourced videos and collaborations with artists Helena Ernst and Giulia Sidoli to exemplify the gravity and variety of sexual harassment and cat calling situations, 3) A virtual room created in Unity which, through the immersive and isolating nature of virtual reality and additional elements of sight and sound, simulates the sensation of anxiety and fear these experiences create. The sensory atmosphere of emotion will brings into context the daily barrage of sexual exploitation women experience. Enclosing the viewer in a room symbolizes the predator and prey relationship, where women are constantly trapped gaze of sexualization.
